Overview

Home of Electronics is a live retail site at homeofelectronics.com. Customers can sign in, buy electronics online, and collect orders from the shop on Luthuli Street, Skyworth Building, using a tracking ID.

The Problem

Walk-in electronics retail on Luthuli Street does not give customers a reliable way to browse stock, reserve an item, and collect it without repeating the same conversation at the stall.

The Approach

Treat the website as the catalogue and reservation layer, and the stall as the fulfilment layer. The tracking ID is the join between the two.

System / Product Design

The public site handles browsing, accounts, and order tracking. Fulfilment stays at the pickup station so the shop does not have to invent a last-mile delivery network to sell online.

Challenges

  • Online catalogue, physical stock

What is listed on the site has to stay honest against what is on the stall. A tracking ID only helps if the item is actually there.

  • Pickup, not delivery

The product is a shop with a web front, not a courier business. The flow has to make collection obvious.

Key Decisions

  • Pickup with a tracking ID

Collection is the fulfilment model. The ID is how a customer and the stall agree on the same order.

  • Accounts for repeat customers

Login keeps orders and tracking attached to a person instead of a one-off checkout that disappears.

Outcome

Live at homeofelectronics.com as an electronics shop with online purchase and in-store pickup.

What I Learned

  • A local shop selling online still needs a clear fulfilment contract.
  • The website is only useful if stock and pickup stay in sync.
